How to Properly Pack & Ship Your Holiday Gifts

Maybe you need to package up that leather tote for your daughter, or perhaps you want to send a pair of leather gloves to your sister in another state. How should we package our leather goods for delivery companies or for their spot under the tree?

First off, examine your leather item  from top to bottom, double-checking that it’s in tiptop shape before being packaged. If your leather gift is a vintage item, you may want to condition it before sending it to its new home. Leather jackets and bags can be conditioned with creamy lotion. This trick is often used in Italian leather shops. Just take a washcloth and lightly dip the cloth in some Nivea crème. Gently rub cream onto leather jacket or bag in a circular motion. This will not only clean the bag but also make it look and feel good as new! To take the scuffs out of your vintage leather shoes, use shoe polish in a color that matches the shoe. If you want to give a pair of leather boots to a friend or family member, you can always keep the body of the boot, then have them “resoled” with a brand new leather sole. Find a shoe specialist that knows how to do the job right.

After your leather item is glossy and pristine, it’s time for packaging. Make sure that your leather good does not have anything rubbing up against it in the box. For purses, make sure that metal chains or handles are put inside the bag, not left dangling outside. If you can, detach all handles or straps, fold them up neatly, and put them inside the back. Most companies will put leather goods in a soft bag, rather than plastic. These bags are usually included with purchase, so save the bags for shipping or packaging your items. For leather jackets or anything that doesn’t come with a soft bag, package with tissue paper to prevent scratching. Then put everything in a structured box. You can buy Christmas boxes of all shapes and sizes at your local department stores. These thicker boxes with prevent anything from deforming or damaging your leather good when shipping.

While you should treat your leather with care, this durable and long withstanding fabric will provide anyone with a gift that will last a lifetime.
